Tegan and Sara Talk About Their Switch From Rock To Pop

Tegan-and-SaraYou can lose a lot of fans switching genres if you don’t know what you’re doing. One can also make a lot of new friends in the process. I’m sure the duo pissed off a few when they went from Rock to Pop but the gamble seems to be paying off.

It all changed in 2013 with the “Heartthrob” CD partly-produced by Greg Kurstin who also worked with Lily Allen, Beck, Kelly Clarkson, Ellie Goulding and Sia. He also co-wrote, produced and played most of the instruments on Adele’s big hit, “Hello.’

Sara told Rolling Stone magazine, “We went pop because I wanted to make music that sounded different from what we were doing, and Tegan wanted to be more successful.” There was a little twin-sister tension however which comes u when the group Ace of Base is mentioned. Tegan loves them – Sara not so much. When the decision was made to go Pop the pair started by naming their favorite pop groups Sara says, “Tegan brought up Ace of Base, because she’s obsessed with music from our high school years, That’s not what I’m into. It took a couple of years to get on the same page.”

They have been going for 14 years, starting as a folk duo, dipping into punk and Rock. Sara adds, “I respect albums you have to listen to 10 times to get into it, but that’s not our band. Tegan and I walk into every room like the only way we’ll survive is if we talk and charm everyone. We’re not slow-burn people. I am a politician; I go around the room and talk to everybody. I think our songs do the same thing.”

While on tour in Scotland in 2008 the sisters got into a physical fit over their musical direction. Tegan says, “We said we would play the show that night, but that we were done.”

Their new album is “Love you To Death” featuring the hit “Boyfriend.” Again Kurstin is the producer but this time for the entire album. For Tegan and Sara – a little tension goes a long way. – by John Beaudin
