In a new Rolling Stone Interview with Patrick Doyle the Piano Man seems more comfortable in his skin – age will do that. The 68-year-old didn’t tour between 2009 and 2013 because of a hip replacement. Instead, as he says it, he was knocking over furniture in his house via a scooter.
Looking back Joel says “New York State Of Mind” is his favorite since it’s turned into a standard and he still wakes up with music in his head – every morning. A melodic idea or a symphonic idea. He puts it this way, music he writes, songs not so much. He hasn’t released new music since 1993 and admits he still could but wont saying, “I’m not compelled to.”
He’s also not one of those old rock stars that hates new music. He’ll hear stuff through osmosis or his daughter will serve something up and he enjoys some of it though he listens to mostly classical these days.
As for Elton? Joel says before touring with Captain Fantastic he had no idea he was such a gifted piano player. Sure he had great praise for all those Elton/Bernie Taupin but he says seeing Elton almost going into a trance on stage was mesmerizing – he’s in a different dimension than you are.
Joel has a handful of U.S. tour dates before the end of the year and he’s going full speed ahead in 2018. – by John Beaudin
